Sun Wah Restaurant, nestled on Castle Peak Road in Cheung Sha Wan, is a gem for anyone craving authentic Hong Kong-style fast food. This humble eatery embodies the vibrant spirit of a traditional cha chaan teng, where hearty flavors meet quick, satisfying service. What makes Sun Wah stand out is not just the bustling local vibe but the unmistakable “wok hei” breath of their stir-fried dishes, particularly the acclaimed Stir-fried Beef Rice Noodles. Here, each bite carries that smoky essence that only a well-seasoned wok can impart—an authentic experience that transports you straight to the heart of Hong Kong’s culinary soul.
Yet, it’s their famed egg tarts that truly captivate. Freshly baked and boasting a golden flaky crust, these tarts balance sweetness with a smooth, richly custardy interior. The crust’s delicate flakiness, resonating between the traditional flaky and shortcrust styles, showcases expert baking craftsmanship rarely found in fast-food diners. Regulars laud their milk tea too, which pairs perfectly with the warm egg custard tart or the moist coconut tarts and cocktail buns, offering an ideal afternoon tea interlude free from excessive sweetness. Sun Wah’s desserts provide a nostalgic, deeply local flavor that champions quality over gimmickry.
While some dishes may lean towards simplicity, they never stray into mediocrity. The satay beef noodles, for instance, might not appeal to every palate, but they reflect an honest, unpretentious approach to fast food dining—a no-frills canvas that lets the star dishes shine brighter. Dining here is an invitation to venture beyond tourist traps and embrace the everyday culinary treasures cherished by Hong Kongers themselves. In summary, Sun Wah Restaurant delivers on both taste and cultural authenticity, making it a must-visit for those eager to savor iconic Hong Kong flavors in a genuinely local setting.

We’ve ordered a Stir-fried Beef Rice Noodles and a Beef in Black Bean Sauce with Rice, with two egg tarts (1 flaky crust and 1 shortcrust). The food is very satisfactory and tasty, especially the ‘Wok Hei’ stir- fried noodles and the egg tarts. The egg tarts taste not too sweet with a smooth texture on the egg mixture, I can taste that the crust is freshly made and baked. What a fabulous Hong Kong restaurant with a deep local cultural vibe.

This place was a terrific chance discovery. We went looking for egg tarts that day and happened to see egg tarts delivered to the display case fresh from the oven. The egg custard fillings were bulging out. The flattened as they cooled. We sat down and ordered 2 for each of us. They were heavenly. The thick crusts were very satisfying. Definitely going back.

I regularly visit this Cha Chaan Teng. Their milk tea and cookie egg tarts are consistently high-quality. While some other menu items are worth trying at least once, for me, the two items above are must-order whenever I go.

Was lucky enough to get an egg tart piping hot, and it was divine! Best traditional flaky crust egg tart I had in HK. In my view, better than the nearby gold garden. The other food I tried was nothing to shout about though. Maybe I don't get the dish, but the satay beef noodles tasted exactly like how it looked - instant noodles with some beef in satay sauce dumped in. Underwhelming for sure. Go for the egg tart!

Just taken 6 minutes of slow walk from where we just had lunch to have reached here. This place is well known for their egg tarts and other bakery stuffs. We ordered one each of egg tart, coconut tart and cocktail bun and a hot HK style milk tea each. The three baking at $9 a piece, comes to $27 and two teas for $44, the grand total of $71 for our afternoon tea dessert. The egg tarts were freshly baked at 3pm daily, so it was pipeping hot when it came to the table, it has a strong egg custard flavour, with a very flaky pastry, just as what I have expected for a good quality egg tarts. The coconut tart wasn't bad either, still very moist with a hint of coconut taste, and because it's still fresh so it's not crumbly at all. Last came the cocktail bun, my all time fravourite since young was not disappointing even having eaten already the two tarts earlier. All three are just nice in the sweetness department. Not like most of the western style baking items in most oversea countries, you would complaint about being "so sweet that your teeth will fall off" (甜到甩牙) is not the case here. This is not located in a tourist area but it is nice to venture out of your comfort zone to experience why the egg tarts and cocktail buns are the Hong- Konger's favorites.

Try their eggs tart since many given good comments about this restaurant. Could find a lot of egg provided and skin is very crispy. Is a good recommendation. Year later we back here again and take their afternoon tea set. Egg tarts is require to order separately. We order their 鲜油菠萝飽 set (cost HK$36). We find it just ok as the top surface not crispy and sweet. We have ordered the egg tarts again, find it standard doesn't drop, each tart cost HK$10. Never regret to recommend here!
